Earnings are dropping, not only due to the econimical crisis but because advertisers are losing faith in the product as Adsense can now be seen on many inferior websites and blogs.
Keep up the web designing as a career and if you want to make money with Adsense you have to make your website so uninteresting that your visitors click the ads to escape :0)

From my point of view Web designing is here to stay and until and unless business is coming through adsense it will be always here.
